Game Options in Setup

Choose a Leader
The leader and civilization you choose will undoubtedly determine your strategy, and will offer certain unique buildings and units.
My personal favourite is the French/Napoleon, as you receive +2 culture per city you create, enabling faster implementation of social policies.
Map Type
Map types with larger land masses mean you will meet more civilizations and city-states sooner, likely ending in more co-operation and possibly more conflict. Island based maps alternatively result in more isolation and an emphasis on discovering seafaring technologies.
- Continents: An earth like world with a mixture of several large land masses and a scattering of islands
- Pangaea: One huge continent with the possibility of some tiny islands
- Archipelago: No large continents, a mixture of large and small islands
Map Size
Determine how compact civilizations grow together and how much room for expansion to leave yourself and the competition. I typically play a huge map size as I like to tend to apply a large empire/economic/social strategy.
Difficulty Level
Determine how savvy the competition is, how "lucky" ancient ruin gifts are, and bonuses you receive in your cities. When playing for the first time, Warlord or easier is recommended.
Game Pace
Determine how long tasks such as scientific research and construction take. A new player should attempt to play the standard time rate to get a feel for the game without having to make more snappy decisions.
