Game Concepts: Ranks and Promotions
Page last updated on 2011 / 02 / 08Acquiring promotions from each of the nation's in Pirates! can help you accomplish a lot more in the limited time of your pirating career. Governor's of cities grant you such promotions.
The more you are promoted, the more prestige is associated with you which in turn improves your post-pirating life and final score.
Promotions also grant you a number of in-play benefits that are not limited to:
- An Increase in Recruitment: Folklore suggests that you are a more successful pirate because you carry rank and favour, pirates in the tavern will join your crew in greater numbers because they think there's more chance of you acquiring the riches and glory they lust for.
- Discounts on ship repairs and upgrades (which can be expensive). Attaining a high enough rank and both become free. The nation granting the promotions obviously sees you as a valuable naval asset and you should be equipped accordingly to further press their agenda.
- Merchants Trade More with you because you are considered more trustworthy.
- Governor's daughters are more infatuated with you which increases your chances of being invited to the ball. 'Plain looking' daughters will be enchanted enough by Captains or better, attractive daughters are wooed by Colonel's and higher while the most beautiful daughters insist on you being a Baron as a minimum.
It is worth noting however, that your rank only carries sway within that particular nation. Being an English Duke will have no relevance in a French, Dutch or Spanish port, for example. Nonetheless, having a high rank can have considerable benefit, particularly for amassing larger crews able to take on the most heavily fortified (and rich) cities for plundering.
Your Captain's log will indicate events that have happened, with flags appearing indicating whether that particular action makes a nation happy or unhappy. Continually making a nation happy will lead to promotions and if you have been working hard to please them (or have achieved Duke status), you will be further awarded with acres of land. Basically attacking any enemy of the state will give you happiness 'points', with double up for grabs when attacking towns that are at war with the nation in question.
Check out the list of promotions for a breakdown of the benefits unlocked by them.
