Game Concepts: Special Items
Page last updated on 2011 / 02 / 08Special items are scattered throughout the game and can enhance various aspects of your gameplay. There are 34 items in total, sub-divided into 17 categories. Each category has two items, where one has more potent effects than the other.
The items can be acquired in three distinct ways:
- In Taverns: The shady traveller at the back of the tavern sometimes offers you an item that may benefit you on your travels, and will offer you it in exchange for gold pieces. The level of difficulty you choose to play, the stage of the game and the number of special items you already own all play a factor in determining the cost. Travelling from tavern to tavern, you may find the same item for differing prices.
- Governor's Daughters: A subselection of special items can be gifted to you by a governor's daughter. They will only be offered to you if the daughter is sufficiently enchanted by your wit and charm, typically after impressing her by your dancing skills. The ruby ring and diamond necklace special items can be gifted to the daughter, who in turn may reciprocate in giving you a special item.
- Fugitives and Criminals of the High Seas: Upon capturing some less savoury types, rather than turning them in, they may try and bribe you with a special item to evade jail. You must weigh up the value of the item and its usefulness to you in comparison to the rewards and any potential favour you may gain from the nation's who sought the capture of the fugitive.
Some of the items gathered are of little importance and rarely benefit you regardless of your strategy. Some, however, are considered essential, such as those that prolong your health and the morale of your crew, maximising the amount of time you can accumulate wealth on the high seas.
Others will help you in specific skillsets, such as dancing or fencing... while other ones will minimise 'downtime' when you are captured or marooned. Try not to pay over the odds for these special items as some of the price tags can be quite high (thousands of pieces of gold)
