Land Battles
Page last updated on 2011 / 02 / 08When attacking a town with sufficient numbers of troops to defend it, a land battle commences; where your pirates are pitted against the city defenders who you must overcome to loot the city.
Land battles are turn-based sequence where you must strategically move your troops across the map and systematically wipe out the enemy or force them to panic and run away.
Initiating a Land Battle
There are two ways to initiate a land battle, with the former being a sure fire way to start a fight!
- Beach your fleet and walk into the town via land. You will always get the option to attack the town regardless of whether the city's nation is hostile to you or not.
- Sail into the city. If the nation is hostile it will offer you the chance to commence battle, otherwise you will sail into the port peacefully. By hitting space in the open seas map you can fire cannon at their port to annoy the city into becoming hostile. If you're successful in this, you can then sail into the city and choose the option to attack.
Commencing Battle
The start of the battle offers you three different positions you would like to start battle from. I typically would recommend an area that offers easy advancement of a 'front' of your troops, and taking advantage of any hillsides or forest squares for when you encounter the enemy (for reasons mentioned in the tip section)
Use your unit groups to position yourself to commence battle. Your aim should be not only to win, but to preserve your troops for future attacks.
Outcomes of the Battle
Your aim is to either wipe out the enemy units or reach the gates of the garrison with one of your units. If you wipe out the enemy, you will be entitled to the full loot of the city, and will likely be able to install a new governor of a nationality of your choice. The latter option of reaching the gates will entitle you to some but not all of the available plunder.
Wiping out armies and installing new governors can carry a lot of favour with the nation's who are at war with the nation of the newly conquered city.
If you fail, most of your troops likely fled in panic and you will return to your ship with a depleted crew.
