Caribbean Strongholds (French, Dutch, Spanish and English)

Strongholds are settlements that can be visited and also conquered. They always belong to one of the colonies (Spain, France, England and The Netherlands).

Antigua is an English colony situated Mid-East on the map, and often trades goods at fair prices. Antigua is typically well-defended and does not often change nationalities, likely due to the fact that there are a lot of other English colonies and thus ships protecting her.

Barbados, also an English settlement, is found to the South East of the game map. Spices sell for a good price here. The settlement is usually well-defended and thus has good plunder potential, although it can be quite difficult to steer your ship onto the small slither of land to commence a land invastion!
Campeche, one of the long-standing Spanish strongholds is located to the Far-West, and is some distance from other major settlements. Well-defended, it is easy to get to due to the prevailin winds but not worth visiting too often due to the long time to get back towards the more populous areas of the map.
Caracas is a Spanish settlement, is located South South East on the Pirates! map. Caracas is home to many a rich Spanish family and typically is a good place to plunder.
Coro is situated on the East side of Venezuela and is only visible during the later eras of the game.
Cumana is in the South East, and is typically heavily defended by the Spanish. Goods can fetch a fair price here and the settlement is known to accommodate non-Spanish smugglers on occasion.
Curacao is also in the South Eastearly direction and is owned by the Dutch. It is surrounded by Spanish outposts and thus has had to fend off numerous attempts to overthrow the Dutch regime there. Curacao is a popular smuggler port for the Dutch who trade Spanish goods there.
Eleuthera is a northerly English settlement that doesn't carry much wealth and historically was frequented by the down and outs- essentially a backwater settlement not worth deviating from the more lucrative paths for.
Florida Keys is a backwater French colony in a Northerly direction of the centre of the map. It tends to offer little chance for trade or plunder but perhaps a handy (if friendly) place to repair your ship and receive promotions.
Gibraltar is a central-Southern located Spanish settlement, sitting inside a gulf with Maracaibo, that offers good prices for luxuries and food. Historically has always been attacked by the English and French.
Gran Granada is next to Lake Nicaragua, on the far West of the map. The settlement is fiercely loyal to Spain, so does not welcome outlaws of the Spanish state. Very worthwhile for plunder, take at least 500 men in this direction to plunder their riches.
Grand Bahama is to the North-East, typically offering little trading value.
Guadeloupe is one of the wealthy French ports around the bustling East side of the map. Alongside Martinique, a good area to accumulate troops if you are French-friendly. Usually well-guarded and does not often change nationalities.
La Habana is one of the oldest Cuban cities, and a Spanish stronghold. It offers good prices on inventory and is an extremely lucrative city to plunder, albeit at likely high cost to your pirate crew count.
Leogane is a fledgeling French settlement situated in a central Northern location on the map. If you're friendly with the French, this is a good place to stock up on food if you intend to sail West.
Maracaibo is a Spanish port to the South, that has moderate plundering and trading opportunities. It is quite hard to make your way to Gibraltar is you are an enemy of Spain, watch out for their fortress wrecking your fleet!
Margarita is near today's Panama canal, to the South West of the map. This is a poor settlement ripe for plundering and handing over to another nation to curry favour.
Martinique is near Guadeloupe to the East of the map, often well guarded, wealthy and offering good trading prices and volume.
Montserrat is within the cluster of Eastern towns, owned by the English and one of their smaller strongholds in the area. Good for topping up your crew if you are known favourably by the English due to its close proximity to other English settlements
