Rank Promotions
Page last updated on 2011 / 02 / 08Promotions not only give you prestige and enhance your legacy, they also offer side-benefits that can strengthen your capabilities on the high seas and favour with important people on the Spanish Main. The following lists potential promotions you can receive from the English, Spanish, French and Dutch governors.
| Letters of Marque: Although not strictly a rank or promotion, at your first landing at a port the governor will offer you a Letter of Marque and Reprisal, authorising you to attach and plunder enemies of the state. This puts you on the step-ladder for promotions but is not necessary for a promotion. | |
| Captain: The lowest rank, defining someone who can take charge of a ship. Attacking a nation's enemies, either ships or city's can quickly ensure a promotion to Captain. By achieving this rank you will find it easier to recruit more men in taverns, by way of a percentage bonus in the number of men willing to join your crew. | |
| Major: A step up from Captain, becoming a Major traditionally was 'a better pay bracket' as well as superiority of a Captain. Acquiring this rank will gain you the benefit of a percentage discount for ship repairs in that nation's ports. | |
| Colonel: Considered of importance as an element of an army, but not yet competent enough to lead the field. Becoming a colonel means merchants can offer more goods to you as well as have more disposable income to buy your goods. This is useful after plundering a number of ships and you need to offload your excess cargo. | |
| Admiral: Considered competent enough to manage a whole fleet of ships and is the highest rank relevant to a naval command chain. By becoming an Admiral you can upgrade your ships at cheaper cost. | |
| Baron: A nobleman that is above all the common people, that should be referred to as My Lord. This lower-upper rank grants you further recruitment bonus in taverns that complements the boost you receive as a Captain. | |
| Count: 3rd highest rank attainable and one of a nobleman, acquiring this rank grants you free ship repairs in that nation's ports. This can save you a considerable amount of cash when looking for repairs after fighting or your fleet being caught in a storm. | |
| Marquis: Superior to all but Duke's, you receive a further bonus when trading with merchants, allowing more goods to be bought as well as the merchant having more disposable cash to buy goods. The bonus is cumulative with the promotion benefits of a Colonel. | |
| Duke: Referred to as Your Grace, the Duke is the highest rank attainable in Pirates! In the social hierarchy, only Kings and Princes have superiority. Becoming a Duke grants you free ship upgrades, which can benefit you not only by saving money for upgrades, but allowing upgrades to be given to ships before you sell them. |
