Special Items

There are a number of special items that have a positive effect on some aspect of your gameplay, and typically cost money.

The following is a list of these items and their benefits:

The set of Balanced Swords and Perfectly Balanced Swords are both designed to increase your speed and agility in fencing. The latter offer a slight further performance benefit than the former. These are useful against some of the more skilled fencing opponents and also as you age (your fencing slows the older you get and the poorer your health is).
The One-Shot Pistol and Brace of Pistols are of similar nature to the swords, both give you an advantage when dueling by inflicting damage on your opponent before the fencing begins. The latter offers a further performance benefit.
The Calfskin Boots and Dancing Slippers enhance your performance at dancing, these items help cover up any mistakes you make in not moving in the right direction during a dance. Dancing can be quite difficult, particularly with the more attractive governor's daughters who seem to prefer a more complicated dance; thus these items can help you to do just enough to impress her while not necessarily dancing well.
The Shrunken Head and Carved Shaman Stick will impress Indian Chief's and curry favour with them, allowing you to ask them to attack ports on your behalf. The Indian tribes tend to be friendly anyway, so there is not a huge requirement for these items unless you have attacked the Indian's or their war canoes beforehand.
The Stringed Fiddle and Concertina improve morale among your crew by offering entertainment on long voyages. The bonus attained is just as effective as hauling a large amount of gold and give you an extra couple of months for further pirating before your crew want to divide the plunder. Effectively these items prolong the time your crew is not unhappy and thus deters them from desertion and mutiny.
The Ruby Ring and Diamond Necklace are expendable items that you can use to woo Governor's daughters, which will increase the romance between you and will also inspire her to present to you a gift in return. The necklace is considered the greater of the two and the present returned is better, and also dependent on the attractiveness of the daughter.
The Dutch Rutter and Spanish Rutter give you greater detail on your Caribbean map, showing more settlements that are otherwise not marked. The Spanish Rutter offers even more detail over the Dutch version.
The False Mustache and Theatrical Disguise allow you to masquerade as someone else and enable trading with merchants in cities that are generally hostile towards you. Merchants can refuse to deal with you if you are a notorious enemy of the nation.
The Quality Spyglass and Fine Telescope items increase your visibility on the open sea, allowing you to 'see' ships that are farther away that you would otherwise not see. The Fine Telescope is the better of the two, pretty much allowing you to see any ship that is within your screen view. Helpful for finding more targets to attack and plunder (or tracking down an elusive pirate).
The Golden Cross and Sacred Relic curry favour with the Jesuit missionaries dotted across the map, similar to the way favour can be swayed with the Indians. Because the missionaries are always friendly, these items are of questionable value.
The Signaling Mirror and Signaling Flare shortens the time it takes for a ship to find you on occasions where you are marooned. As you are only marooned when you lose your last ship of your fleet, these items are of unlimited value, unless you find yourself marooned on a regular basis.
The Lock Picking Kit and Skeleton Key shortens the time you spend in jail by offering a faster opportunity to escape jail, with the Skeleton Key giving you the chance quicker. The opportunity will give you a chance to sneak out of town.
The Leather Vest and Metal Cuirass improves your ability to deflect thrusts during fencing, essentially ignoring the 'hit' and allowing you to attack during this time. Helpful against skilled swordsmen who would otherwise beat you with their speed.
The Medicinal Herbs and Incan Mystic Salve prolong your health, allowing your pirating career to last for longer and also combat the effects of ageing (your fencing skills slow with age). Regardless of when you acquire these, the beneficial effect is constant, regardless of health and age. The latter is more effective and has been known to extend your pirating career into your early fifties!
